Daemons

A daemon (pronounced dee-mon, not day-mon) is a process that runs in the back-ground without an associated terminal or login shell. There are many standard daemons, some of which run periodically to perform particular tasks (like atrun, typically executed every five minutes by cron), while others run continuously, waiting to deal with some specific event (like inetd and lpd).
