Two Existing Firms associated with Easton Pit

Stones Ltd/Haul-Waste Ltd

William Stone established the firm in the mid 1800s as a coal and haulage company from Emerald Place (where Lansdowne Court now stands). As his concern grew he bought premises on the corner of Stapleton Road/Lansdowne Road. The business was inherited by his sons Samuel and Arthur and the business became known as ‘S. & A. Stone’. In the early 1900s Arthur's two sons, Raymond and Arthur, joined the now thriving haulage firm - by this time the coal side of the business had ceased. By the outbreak of World War Two the brothers Arthur and Raymond, were in control of the Company. Arthur’s son, Chris, is presently the Managing Director of Stones Ltd. Stones itself is divided into Municipal Hire Services Ltd, Mediwaste Ltd and S. & A. Stone Engineering Services.

Hemmings Waste Disposal

Founded by George Hemmings in the late 19thC. He used to drive a pony and cart for Nailsea Gas Works before applying for a tender for colliery transport work at Easton Colliery. He won the contract and started with 24 horse drawn carts based at his site next to the colliery - this site is still the HQ of todays Bristol-wide company. In one corner of the yard there still stands a building which was used as a mortuary for dead miners from the local pits of Deep Pit, Speedwell and Parkfield collieries.

George was joined in business by his son, Samuel and, in 1924, by his grandson, also called Samuel who is still in charge of the business today although his son, yet another Samuel, is the present Managing Director.
