Usability Survey

I'm developing a survey on usability, I don't think it's quite right yet, but I would still welcome anyone using it to leave feedback on my research topic (or about the survey) - Click Here to take part in a usability survey, and support my PhD research, for anyone who does not want to remain anonymous, I would be pleased to take an interest in their research.

The survey compares these interfaces -

Taxonomy - http://www.cems.uwe.ac.uk/~phale/ELearning/ELearningDemonstration1.htm.

Diagrammatic - http://www.cems.uwe.ac.uk/~phale/ELearning/ELearningDemonstration2.htm.

And asks for further advice on end-user programming.

I'm interested in feedback from anyone, whatever their level of IT skills.

E-Science/Engineering

It would be useful to build a Semantic Web system for modelling and education mainly in the engineering and science fields. This would involve enabling a Semantic Web modelling infrastructure that could be the basis of future research in learning systems. In order to achieve these aims applications could be invesitgated and reviewed that assist in model building. The system created would also be used to promote engineering to a skeptical public who see the profession as poorly paid and dirty, (House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology report science and society), and remote from the public (Canavan et al).

E-Learning and Computing Technologies

This project will involve building an environment where end-users programmers can create their own educational models to aid their learning and to assist in teaching or research. The environment will be aimed towards academic staff, students, and members of the public who are attempting to use computing technologies to further their knowledge or put across knowledge of a domain. Our intention is to enable a wide range of people to create E-Learning models when previously they did not have the time available or the inclination. The means to achieve this is provision of a freely available web-based visual model creation tool that requires the minimum possible code writing expertise from the end-user.

With the development of technologies under the broad terms of Semantic Web and Web 2.0 there are opportunities to establish a highly interactive web based learning environment. The constructionist approach to understanding problems is to learn about them by modelling them. This approach can be used in combination with research into enabling end user programming techniques for modelling in order to provide an environment for non programmers to model their problems. Visualisation and interaction will provide rapid feedback that gives a powerful representation of the environment to be modelled.

Many people would like to make greater use of computer technology but are hampered by the need to learn programming languages if they are to fully interact with software. Instead they are limited to the use of certain features that are provided for them. A further constraint is the cost of software, and for this project we will develop free software and encourage a community of end-user developers, and modellers.

The aim is to create a software development environment that enables people to customise their own software solution. This is an alternative to provision of software as a finished article that can't be changed. It is intended that the learning software can be customised without requiring programming expertise.

This research will be part of our co-ordinated efforts to enable end-user programming for knowledge management (including e-learning), modelling and decision support, and simulation. Therefore the research will concentrate mainly on translation for knowledge management and enabling academics and students to create e-learning systems. This is illustrated in the figure below.

End User Programming Diagram - Research Aim - Illustrating need to translate between human and computer and the increase in amount of calculation between domains of knowledge management, decision support and simulation. The increase in complexity is of calculation in the direction from knowledge management to decision support to simulation, and of information in the other direction from simulation to decision support to knowledge management.

The intention is to create an online community that can provide free software for modelling and education. The advantages of open source collaboration are that as well as allowing researchers to co-operate and work together where they share an interest; it will also allow the untapped potential to be developed of those who do not have an official research position. This includes students, people employed outside the academic environment, retired people and amateurs who have useful expertise. Astronomy, for example, has harnessed skills of this very diverse range of people to make new discoveries (Mutchler and Schenk). The expertise provided by anyone involved would be in providing feedback on usefulness, or ease of use of software, as well as actual involvement in software development. This means feedback would be sought from users of software even if they were not software experts. Meetings and forums could be arranged, both for web based and real world participation. Researchers would benefit the community by providing modelling and education tools online and for libraries. This is different from other open source communities in that the software could be easier to use and develop, and so involve those who have not previously been capable of participating in software development.

It is important to provide an alternative way of representing models, which does not require the user to write code. The tool created must make it easy to interact with and change the models, and easy to share information with others. This can also involve use of editing tools such as wikis (Protégé Community Wiki),(Vanguard Software Modelling Wiki), (Visual Knowledge), blogs, and semantic web editors (Amaya),(Quint, V., Vatton, 2004 and 2005) to allow discussion and explanation of the models.

There is an urgent need for Semantic Web tools to illustrate the benefits this technology can provide for education, this paper (EASE: The European Association Semantic Web Education) (Diederich et al) explains this need. There is also a need for education in the use of Semantic Web technologies for industry. Some Semantic Web tools are available, explained by EASE and in the (Jena User Conference) or being developed at present, but they are still difficult for people to make use of as they take a good deal of development expertise. REASE (the repository of EASE for learning units) provides a way to find and create learning materials for industrial applications of Semantic Web technologies.

E-Learning, Semantic Web Technologies, and Constructionism

Semantic Web Languages can be used for creation and editing of E-Learning objects (Stutt and Motta, 2004). This would allow the use of web-based distributed constructionist projects in teaching (Resnick, 1996) and (Stutt and Motta, 2004).

The Constructionism idea is based on the constructivist theories of Piaget and the use of Logo for teaching (MIT Logo Foundation) and (Papert) To this theory constructionism "adds the idea that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally-meaningful products" (Resnick, 1996). Resnick goes on to say "This vision puts construction (not information) at the center of the analysis. It views computer networks not as a channel for information distribution, but primarily as a new medium for construction, providing new ways for students to learn through construction activities by embedding the activities within a community." Resnick explains the theory that influencing this thesis, known as Distributed Constructionism. This involves a community gaining an understanding of a problem by interacting with a knowledge building community, the problem to be modelled, and tools to model the problem, and build a solution. An example that Resnick cites is the work of Kimberly (1995) where participants became part of the simulation they constructed in order to understand economic models. The idea of constructionism is related to end user programming, and ontology modelling, and building which are explained in this thesis. To test all of these theories interactive models were constructed, to demonstrate this approach together with explanations of how the tools can be used. This adds interactivity so that users can change the information visualized and see how the results change.

UWE wins HP teaching grant against global competition

From UWE Bulletin June 2007 Page 10 - http://info.uwe.ac.uk/news/UWENews/images/bulletinJun07.pdf - June 2007.

The University has beaten global competitors by winning valuable support from HP in the form of the 2007 HP Technology for Teaching Higher Education Grant. UWE is the first post 92 university in the UK to win this grant. Dr Liz Falconer, Manager of the E-Learning Development Unit in IT Services, who put together the proposal to HP, said, "We are really delighted to have won this award". Just 30 universities worldwide were invited to apply and UWE was one of the 12 universities to succeed. The prize from HP includes a product bundle and cash grant to the total value of US$70,000 that will enable the University to develop innovative teaching solutions using state of the art mobile technology.

"Included in the bundle are 21 networked tablet PC computers that we intend to use to develop the use of online interaction in the classroom. This means that students will be able to interact with teaching materials presented on interactive whiteboards. We believe that HP was impressed with our serious commitment to maximising the potential of e-learning. For the past four years UWE has worked on a project called the 'Research Observatory' which supports online learning across the University, including student dissertation work in our Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, who are our partners in this HP project. We are also keen to involve our students in the design of online learning. The new version of the Research Observatory, due to go live in summer 2007, offers the facility for students to revise and use the same learning materials but to select how the material is viewed. This offers the potential for students with a range of abilities and learning styles to design online environments that accommodate their preferences, and this is the main aim of the HP project. This might be particularly effective for students with autism spectrum disorders or similar cognitive profiles."

The original Research Observatory can be viewed at http://ro.uwe.ac.uk. On the launch of the new version this URL will automatically be redirected.

Gary Alden, HP UK Corporate Marketing Manager, said, "We are very excited to have the opportunity to partner with UWE as this project is implemented. Our goal is that the HP Technology for Teaching Initiative supports the development of mobile technology in the classroom."

John Rushforth, Deputy Vice Chancellor, said, "Winning this prestigious award against global competition is a sign that people are recognising the innovative nature of what we are trying to achieve at UWE. Of course being one of the largest users of online teaching materials in the UK gives us an edge, but so does our record of providing quality teaching to diverse groups."

Why do many lecturers perceive a qualitative difference between placement and non-placement students during their final undergraduate year? These are complex questions for which definitive answers are not readily available. Our project focuses on one aspect of the student experience - the role of work-based placement learning in supporting the development of a reflective capacity. Within undergraduate education there is an increasing emphasis on the need for reflection as an integral part of becoming a lifelong learner. It is also an essential element within professional training. (This project is also funded by the Charitable Trusts of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.)

It focuses particularly on the use of computer networks to support students working together on design and construction activities, and it argues that these types of activities are particularly effective in supporting the development of knowledge-building communities. The paper describes three main categories of distributed constructionist activities: discussing constructions, sharing constructions, and collaborating on constructions. In each category, it describes ongoing research projects at the MIT Media Lab and discusses how these projects support new ways of thinking and learning.

Virtual Worlds and Second Life

UWE e-learning team wins Second Life bid

From UWE Bulletin July 2007 Page 8 - http://info.uwe.ac.uk/news/UWENews/images/bulletinJuly07.pdf.

The E-learning Development Unit has been successful in obtaining one of five Second Life Land Grants from Education UK. The programme offers the opportunity for educators to pilot how to extend or enhance the students' learning experience by using the simulation and creativity tools available within Second Life. Second Life is a 3D virtual world built up by its users.

UWE's project is to build a Research Observatory in Second Life (RO@SL). The building will act as a hub for all other resources and activities that currently form or will form part of the Research Observatory that the e-learning team is developing at http://ro.uwe.ac.uk.

Manuel Frutos-Perez (Deputy Head of the E-learning Development Unit), says, "We will design collaborative tasks that groups of students will complete in Second Life. The tasks will seek to maximise group creativity and will encourage students to be enterprising and to engage in discovery, synthesis and fact-finding missions. The tasks will be structured and facilitated by academic staff but will essentially be learner-centric.

"We are also planning a design competition for first year students of the Faculty of Environment and Technology in September 2007. We expect the RO@SL building to be something pretty unusual as in the virtual world you can ignore gravity if you want to, and fly and teleport. We also plan to enable meetings and symposia for research students, have a wall where they can write their thoughts and lots of other interactive events."

UWE's e-learning team consists of Dr Liz Falconer (Head of the E-learning Development Unit), Manuel Frutos-Perez (Deputy Head of the Unit), Dr Olivia Billingham (Research Associate) and Lee Griffin (Web Developer).

Dr Liz Falconer and Manuel Frutos-Perez in the virtual world with the UWE slogan start here go anywhere.
