Introduction to MIDI Sequencing with Cubase SX
Setting up Cubase with Simple Synth
Note - You should only follow these instructions if you're using
Cubase in room 1N95 at UWE!
Step 1 - Setting up Simple Synth
- On the Apple Mac, find the program:
Applications > SimpleSynth
- For the MIDI Source, select "SimpleSynth virtual input"
- DO NOT EXIT SimpleSynth, but you can select the yellow button to
minimise its window.
Step 2 - Setting up Sound Preferences
- On the Apple Mac, find the program:
Applications > System Preferences
- Select Hardware > Sound
- Click on the Input tab
- Click on Ozonic Multichannel Firewire to select it
- Click on the Output tab
- Click on Ozonic Multichannel Firewire to select it
- Close the System Preferences window
Step 3 - Setting up Cubase SX
- On the Apple Mac, start the program:
Applications > Cubase SX
- If you have not yet started a Cubase project file, follow these steps:
- When the program starts, from the menu select File > New Project
- From the list of options select "16 Track Midi Project"
- Choose a suitable folder for your project file and click on "Choose".
- If you have already started a project and you have previously saved a project file, follow these steps:
- When the program starts, from the menu select File > Open
- Select your project file
- From the menu, select Devices > MIDI Device Manager
- If "GM Device" does NOT appear as an installed device, then click on
"Install Device", select "GM Device" and click on OK
- In the list of installed devices, select "GM Device"
- Ensure that the Output is set to "SimpleSynth virtual input"
- Close the window.
- From the menu, select Devices > Device Setup
- In VST Multitrack, select the Setup tab
- Ensure that the ASIO driver is set to "Ozonic Multichannel"
- If a pop-up window appears, select "Switch"
- In Default MIDI Ports, select "Keyboard" as the MIDI input
- Select "SimpleSynth virtual input" as the MIDI output.
- Click on APPLY and OK
When Using Cubase
For each MIDI track you're going to use, set the the input to
"Keyboard" and the output to "GM Device"
Once the output is set to GM Device, you can choose suitable patch names
from the pop up menu.
Restarting a Session from Last Week
If you want to pick up where you left off from a previous session, then
you MUST go through all the steps 1 to 3 above. Don't miss any of them
out or something might not work ok.
When you start Cubase SX, you need to open the project file that you
saved at the end of the previous session - don't create a new project file!
