"New Business Opportunities in Space". One-day space conference. Organised by the West of England Aerospace Forum (WEAF).

Tuesday 24 July 2007 at Exeter, Devon

Details http://www.weaf.co.uk

Space is a fast-growing business. Data from satellites of various kinds is finding ever wider applications. ESA and NASA have ambitious plans for new programmes involving human spaceflight. Space tourism is within sight of becoming a serious business. - WEAF is offering its members an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in this one-day conference. - The major players of the space industry will outline new opportunities, SMEs will be able to market themselves, and space tourism companies will outline their plans. - This is a conference for both aviation and space companies, because space tourism blends current space technology with carrying passengers safely, and this requires aviation skills and experience.

Programme management in a systems engineering environment (in association with the APM

A tale of two disciplines... (if you're allowed to call systems engineering a discipline!). This joint event with the APM will feature guest speakers covering real world case studies, followed by an open forum giving attendees the chance to discuss how systems engineering and programme management interact, and to what extent they overlap.

Systems Engineering and Project or Programme Management need to be linked effectively to promote the prospects of success in complex systems development. It is the objective of this evening to explore the interfaces between the disciplines with a view to improving understanding of the differing viewpoints and the opportunities to improve practice. With speakers from both professional bodies it is a topic that we would expect to see stimulate a lively debate. To ensure that discussions stay grounded in reality, we also have an end-user representative with years of experience of waiting for capabilities to actually be delivered!

In the APM corner: Les Oliver is an experienced project manager and systems engineer within the defence and space industries, and now works as an independent consultant;

In the INCOSE corner: Terry Murphy is an experienced systems engineering manager within MBDA, although the views expressed will be his own on this occasion!

Representing the end-users: Simon Hutton used to be an officer in the Royal Navy and now also works as an independent consultant specialising in defining stakeholder requirements;

Referee for the evening: Richard Beasley is the Corporate Skill Owner for Systems Engineering within Rolls-Royce worldwide.

What is Needed to Extend Life Permanently Beyond Earth?

by Elon Musk, Owner and CEO, SpaceX

** SPECIAL EVENT **

Lecture Theatre at 4 Hamilton Place, London W1J 7BQ.

Public open lecture - All visitors welcome - No admission fee - No tickets required - Doors open 5:30pm

A personal message from Elon Musk

"For the first time in the four billion year history of Earth, there exists the possibility of extending life beyond Earth to other planets. It is difficult to predict how long that window will remain open. I will talk about why this goal should be considered important and why we should seek to fulfil it this century".

"Commercial space transport companies, including possibly SpaceX, are needed to make this happen, as the commercial sector is best suited to optimizing both the cost and reliability of access to space, just as the commercial air and ground transport companies did in their sectors. I believe we will need at least an order (perhaps two orders) of magnitude reduction in present day space launch costs and flight failures to achieve the above goal of becoming a multi-planetary species. This lecture will describe how SpaceX intends to make progress in that direction with the Falcon 1, Falcon 9 and Dragon".

SpaceX

In an era when most technology based products follow a path of ever-increasing capability and reliability while simultaneously reducing costs, launch vehicles today are little changed from those of 40 years ago. Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) aims to change this paradigm by developing a family of launch vehicles which will ultimately reduce the cost and increase the reliability of space access by a factor of ten. Coupled with the newly emerging market for private and commercial space transport, this new model will re-ignite humanity's efforts to explore and develop Space.

SpaceX is based on the philosophy that simplicity, low-cost, and reliability can go hand in hand. By eliminating the traditional layers of management internally, and sub-contractors externally, costs are reduced while speeding decision making and delivery. Likewise, by keeping the vast majority of manufacturing in house, costs are again reduced keeping tighter control of quality and ensuring a tight feedback loop between the design and manufacturing teams. And by focusing on simple, proven designs with a primary focus on reliability, SpaceX reduce the costs associated with complex systems operating at the margin.

"F111 case study workshop" event has been brought forward by a week to Wednesday 9th July.

Unless otherwise indicated, the event will take place in Room 2D7 (past the shops in the middle of campus, up the stairs through the library/reception area, and then down the corridor on the left hand side) on the University of the West of England (UWE), Frenchay Campus, Bristol. This is a different room to the one normally used for the past two years, but is in the same area of campus and was used for the MODAF tools event.

F111 case study workshop

The General Dynamics (GD) F-111 is unarguably the most controversial fighter-attack aircraft ever developed. It suffered from a nearly impossible multi-role/multi-service requirement specification, and a protracted development cycle in which numerous serious technical problems had to be identified and corrected. Please come along and join us as we explore this case study. The case study material is freely available from the Air Force Center for Systems Engineering.

Mars Society Convention - Universe Today - 11th Annual Mars Society Convention on 14th-17th August - Written by Ian O'Neill - Next week, Boulder, Colorado will play host to the eleventh annual Mars Society conference. There will be a huge array of speakers, lectures and workshops anyone can get involved in to learn more about the future of manned exploration on Mars. The Mars Society is an international organization working to raise public awareness about the opportunities we have on Mars and push for eventual manned settlements. Primarily, the Mars Society is pushing for better governmental spending in planetary missions, but there is an increasing awareness that many aims can only be achieved through private enterprise. The organization doesn't limit itself to political activities. For years the organization has managed a series of "Mars Analogues," isolated habitats where volunteers carry out extended experiments, studying everything from human psychology in confined living conditions to working in extreme environments (such as desert plains). - Mars Society.

The Emergence of the Virtual Observatory - British Computer Society Norwich - http://eastanglia.bcs.org/e_20080131.htm - East Anglia Branch - Date: 31st January 2008 at 7.30 - Presenter: Bob Bentley - Venue: Room 01.10, Elizabeth Fry Building, UEA, Norwich - Synopsis: Advances in computing over the last 10-15 years have transformed data analysis. Twenty years ago data was stored on magnetic tapes and the scientist had to travel to data centres in order to access them. With the advent of the Internet and cheap large capacity disks, data became more accessible; with the development of "Grid" middlewhere it has become possible to undertake complex tasks remotely. In many disciplines Virtual Observatories are being established to bring these enhanced capabilities to the community.

Universe Today - Beer and Burgers With a Side of Science - Written by Nancy Atkinson - Astronomers and cosmologists endeavor to solve some of the great mysteries of the universe. One mystery scientists here at the AAS meeting in St. Louis are seriously trying to address is how to make science more interesting and accessible to the general public. While this issue has little cosmic implications, having a "science literate" population in our ever-growing technology-based civilization is not just an advantage, but becoming an absolute necessity. In attempt to tackle this concern, a group of astronomers are encouraging others to follow the lead of a concept that seems to be working: Invite the public out for a beer. - June 4th, 2008.
