EUREKA - Innovation, research and development grants - Practical Advice for Business. - EUREKA is a pan-European network for encouraging market-oriented, collaborative research and development (R&D) projects, which lead to the development of innovative products, processes or services.

The UK Government sponsors Eureka but does not own or direct the projects - Eureka is definitely a "bottom-up" scheme i.e. the projects are wholly within the direction of the partners. Therefore we can contact the lead partner in the projects we find of interest. It follows that it will be wholly the partners decision if they want to incorporate us into the project, and under what terms. (And, of course, some of these projects may not involve any UK partner and obviously the UK has even less "ownership" of these projects than for a project involving a partner based in the UK).

As far as proposing a project (in the hope of finding a partner), we do so directly by downloading the form from the Eureka website and submit it electronically to the Eureka Secretariat website. Automatically the idea will be forwarded to Business Link for UK approval. This is because the proposal has originated from the UK - each proposal has to be approved by the Government of the country from which it has come.

However two further things are needed for all ideas being put onto the Eureka website:-

1 - the technological area of the project has to be specified (I assume IT in your case, but you can be more specific e.g. IT software or IT hardware).

2 - each idea has to have an acronym

So we should provide 1 and 2 when we submit our initial idea.

Please also bear in mind that the UK (like most other Eureka countries) will only fund a UK university in a project if there is also a UK company in the project. So, to take fictitious examples :-

UWE + Dutch Company - Result: no funding for UWE

UWE + Dutch Company + UK based Company - Result: possible funding for UWE (note the word possible, because all funding is competitive, so there is no absolute promise of funding)

NESTA - The Power of Collaborative Innovation - http://blogs.nesta.org.uk/connect/2008/01/the-power-of-co.html - By Roland Harwood - The main focus of the World Economic Forum at Davos later this month is The Power of Collaborative Innovation. Obviously I'd love to attend but alas my own personal networks don't extend that far, but I'll certainly be watching the podcasts. The fact that they have chosen this topic does however give me significant encouragement that we are onto something interesting with the Nesta Connect programme which is underpinned by the concept of supporting extreme collaboration across disciplines, organisations and places.

Crossing the Void

Technologies are changing rapidly and show no signs of slowing down. Audiences want innovative ways of experiencing content - web, mobile, interactive TV. Commissioners no longer commission television programmes, but 360 projects that get content out to audiences how, when and where they want it. 'Crossing the Void' will explore the changing commissioning landscape by bringing TV and new media indies together to discuss collaborative opportunities.

Shadow Play

Designers of products and software are starting to use human social and emotional cues for control and communication: voice, body language, facial expression and gesture. This promises a revolution in our relationship to products, buildings, environments and the technologies embedded in them.

Most experimental 'social machines' to date have emerged from computer science and robotics engineering departments. Great progress has been made investing robotic prototypes with some degree of social and emotional credibility. However the ‘bottom up’ engineering approach is only one tactic that will be required for the successful development of advanced socially responsive robots. The Art and Design sector also has a major ‘top down’ role to play. After all, the credible simulation and manipulation of human emotional and social cues and responses is the daily work of most Arts and Design disciplines.

This conference will bring together industry professionals and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), to launch Shadowplay, a collaborative research project created by Andrew J King, Senior Lecturer in Critical Theory, School of Design at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth (AIB) and Piers Bizony, media producer in the field of Public Understanding of Science. The aim is to build an animatronically simulated humanoid robot, representing a model that might exist in, say, 20 years’ time. This robot is essentially a physical illusion, operated by human performers using remote control. It will enable project participants to role-play the experience of interacting with an apparently intelligent, socially competent machine.
