Dr John Lanham

In the context of aerospace based manufacturing and related areas of work the Aerospace Manufacturing Research Centre at the University of the West of England (UWE) has been leading a number of costing and cost modelling based projects with key regional aerospace companies - Airbus UK and Rolls Royce. These projects have covered a range of areas including process modelling, design cost modelling, factory simulation and have resulted in a team based at UWE with considerable expertise and interest in cost modelling approaches and related software systems. This team operates under the acronym of SEEDS - Systems Engineering for Estimation and Decision Support and has a range of interests that encompass systems engineering, cost modelling and business and manufacturing systems simulation and modelling. The SEEDS group currently has five PhD students working in this field, an EPSRC Case award co-sponsored by Airbus UK in the area of Business System Modelling and Simulation, another with a retail company in the area of Lean Systems for retail and a third working in the area of Cost Model Selection. A further two students are in the final stages of their work, one working in the field of Cost Visualisation and the other in the field of intelligent software based Information System Design Tools.

Current Projects

The RAMP (Revolutionary Aerospace Machining Processes) project aims to investigate the further deployment of High Performance Machining (HPM) in the Aerospace industry, especially of new materials such as titanium, Waspalloy, and Jetheat. HPM technology is no longer novel but its utilisation within the aerospace industry is still limited, mainly for machining aluminium components.
