Vacancy - PhD Studentship: Investigating Laser Transparent Ceramics

PhD Studentship: Investigating Laser Transparent Ceramics for use as moulds in the Superplastic Form - http://info.uwe.ac.uk/vacancies/job_details.asp?ref=PHD/030807 - Since 1997, scientists working in the Aerospace Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) at UWE have been investigating novel ways of developing the phenomena of Superplastic Forming and Diffusion Bonding (SPF/DB). SPF provides extraordinary ductility to many metals allowing complex shapes to be produced, whilst DB joins components without using fasteners, welding or adhesives but with strengths similar to the parent material. The work has led to the vision of an integrated cell in which laser(s) will be used to perform, not only the SPF/DB operations, but most of the pre and post forming work as well. Central to fulfilling the vision is the use of ceramic moulds in which the components will be directly heated by a laser beam(s) and subsequently formed.

Systems Engineering Estimation & Decision Support

Decision Support and Cost Management Consultancy

Our Consultancy Involves - Assisting with:-

Pre Production

Production

The aim is to reduce the costs of design and production, and manage risk and uncertainty. To achieve this we show where problems are by modelling the supply chain. We also assist with the flow of information to support design and production. To report on this we visualise the supply chain to aid in determination of root causes of production problems such as excess work in progress.

Expertise

Our expertise is in working with organisations involved in manufacturing or distribution of products. We apply techniques for managing, categorising and visualising information, to support costing of complex products and management of supply chains. This can assist companies to minimise their production and distribution problems.

Our main area of research and consultancy is that of software techniques for analysing and reporting on the costs involved in design and manufacture of products, and integrating such tools into the infrastructure that exists in organisations.

We have experience of working with aerospace and other organisations including Rolls-Royce, Airbus, a wholesale supplier, and Koala Publishing. Research projects have involved providing means to visualise cost information. Visualisation permits in depth analysis in order to locate high cost and risk. This is aided by our knowledge of Semantic Web techniques.

Approach

We visit the 'shop floor' and discuss options with employees in design and production, and with other software users. Initially we work on a small pilot project. We can then expand best practice wider in the business and its supply chain.

Knowledge Transfer

We provide collaboration and consultancy with our partners Knowledge West and Bath University. We also provide continuous professional development training and education with Bristol University.

Case Studies

Airbus

The ACCS (Aerospace Composite Costing System) project sponsored by Airbus UK provided an integrated cost modelling system for engineers planning the manufacture of wing-box components. ACCS allowed for the costing of novel composite moulding processes.

Rolls-Royce

The ICES (Implied Cost Evaluation System) focused on modular and automated modelling for costs of ownership, and total life-cycle costs for complex components and assemblies. Templates of both the product model and process planning sequence were created, together with tools to assist modellers to develop the cost model, and model uncertainty. The full cost breakdown was visualised with a cost map of the total product model.

The DATUM (Design Analysis Tool for Unit cost Modelling) project involving UWE and Southampton University and sponsored by Rolls-Royce was a program of design to cost research. The role of cost modeling within the design process for the development of a civil gas turbine engine was investigated. The novel application of a generic financial modeling tool to an engineering cost estimating problem was demonstrated, together with modelling of uncertainty. The tool was used to capture and disseminate costing knowledge and develop cost models. UWE are continuing to develop cost models for Rolls-Royce.

Design Analysis Tool for Unit cost Modelling - http://argos.e-science.soton.ac.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=project:project_description - Executive Summary - The DATUM project seeks to exploit work that was carried out by UWE for the EPSRC ICES (Implied Cost Evaluation System) project for which Rolls Royce was a research partner. - The DATUM project has prototyped a number of software architectures, user interfaces and data models. Furthermore, a thorough world-wide survey of possible software tools has been carried out and a short-list of these has been compiled. All of the tools on this short-list have been evaluated. - In addition, an extensive evaluation of existing RR tools has been carried out (including CAPPe).

Wholesale Supplier

The project is in collaboration with one of the leading wholesalers in UK. The aim of this project is to reduce or eliminate non-value added activities in wholesale supply chains. Overall the research aims to provide an analytical framework that would provide a process for reducing the costs associated with inventory, obsolescence, long lead times and distribution. The models were developed using lean, process modelling and decision supporting tools, based on information and data collected from industrial partner. The models were adapted to alternate supply chain/inventory scenarios with the objective of developing a supportable argument for a more efficient and harmonised supply chain. The models will direct attention to opportunities to streamline business operations and accelerate the pace of innovation and provide the visibility needed to target areas of continuous improvement.

Research

The SEEDS team is part of the Aerospace Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) - http://www.uwe.ac.uk/cems/research/centres/amrc.html. Our expertise is in working with organisations mainly those involved in manufacturing or distribution of products. We apply techniques for managing, categorising and visualising information to support costing of complex products and managing of supply chains.

Our main area of research and consultancy is that of software techniques for analysing and reporting on the costs involved in design and manufacture of products, and integrating such tools into the infrastructure that exists in organisations.

We are involved in cost modelling solutions, and have experience of working with aerospace and other organisations. We have been working with Rolls-Royce aerospace, Airbus, a wholesale supplier and Koala Publishing. Research projects have involved providing means to visualise cost information generated by estimation packages, essential for cost estimation. Visualisation of the cost information permits in depth analysis so as to locate high cost and risk. This is aided by our knowledge of Semantic Web technologies. The Semantic Web is an approach invented by Tim Berners-Lee (a UK physicist at the time), for information sharing and retrieval. This technology is more affordable than traditional software development and enables integration of software systems.

We provide collaboration and consultancy through Knowledge West with Bath University and a cost modelling collaboration with Southampton University and companies including Rolls-Royce. We also provide continuous professional development training and education with AMRC, and Bristol University.

A further project, the Design Analysis tool for Unit-cost Modelling project (DATUM), applies the ICES technology using commercial, web based tools. We are working to enable users to program by means of our Semantic Web research and consultancy. To achieve this we are using a systematic computer independent approach to our Decision Support and costing modelling.

We apply techniques in managing, categorising and visualising information to provide decision support for design and manufacture .... details

Research

Research projects have involved providing means to visualise cost information generated by estimation packages, a task severely missing at the present day. Visualisation of the cost information will permit analysing the cost information in depth so as to locate not only over cost areas, but also areas of cost which are problematic for other reasons (e.g. uncertainty), or which present the best cost reduction opportunities. Prior to visualising information, it was necessary to assess cost estimation methodologies so as to evaluate the usefulness of their output for visualisation.

Parametric Cost Estimation (PCE) techniques were first evaluated. It was determined that despite their requirements of a low volume of input data, making them suitable at stages where little is known about a product, their output did not provide enough details to benefit from a visualisation tool, unless a large number of such models are used to increase the data volume (which would be time consuming and costly).

Research was then carried on to study an alternative to PCE, namely Generative Cost Estimation (GCE). GCE do generate an ideal input to hypothetical cost visualisation tools in that an extensive hierarchical cost information structure can be produced, containing simultaneously numerous data fields (e.g. time and uncertainty in addition to a cost figure), at a detailed level (e.g. in the form of a complete Bill Of Materials, or as a process sequence).

Using CGE it is possible to generate costs from fundamental equations, process models and accounting rules. Hence the cost estimate can be compared with parametric models and any differences fully rationalised and understood.

A visualisation tool was created. It was vital to ensure that this tool could read data from a wide number of formats to make it compatible with numerous cost estimation packages used by our partners (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, DecisionPro (now Vanguard System), and generic formats such as text, Comma Separated Values and eXtensible Markup Language XML). The tool contains a combination of hypertextual and exploratory techniques allowing for both knowledge discovery and data analysis in one package. Graphical representations were used to take advantage of human cognition, thus increasing knowledge discovery efficiency, mainly thanks to a graphical hierarchies representation tool named Cost Map. The efforts invested into easing the migration of knowledge from depositories or generation packages to the visualisation tool were repeated to ensure that the Cost Map itself could be distributed easily to a wide range of users, independently from their location, hardware and software configurations. This was possible by implementing exporting facilities in platform independent formats such as raster pictures as well as vector graphics in the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format. These outputs make the Cost Map usable in documents produced by packages such as the Microsoft Office suite, as well as interactive web based pages. Lighter SVG versions were also produced for compatibility with mobile devices (e.g. Pocket PCs and mobile phones offering a particular SVG implementation viewer).

This approach makes it possible to display a holistic view of costs for a complex product. The use of a cost map permits designers to quickly identify priority areas for a complex design, which may have many levels of assembly and many thousands of parts. Hence, for example, the designer will be able to identify areas of high cost uncertainty (therefore potentially high cost risk) or areas of high relative cost.

Research has been undertaken into the ability to analyse cost with stochastic input variables. Hence enabling the cost model to allow designers to describe the current level of uncertainty of the product attributes (and possibly process uncertainty for new or poorly understood processes). This allows a cost estimate to be computed as a distribution. Further work has been undertaken into allowing wide access to cost models by the use of web-based tools that run through standard web browsers.

We have developed and used technigues to enable decision support during product development, whilst minimising dependence on specialist software and detailed programming effort. The basis of this is an Ontology that can be visualised and edited in tree form. We are using the open standard Stanford University Ontology tool Protege. This Ontology can be translated into a Decision Support tool called Vanguard System (formerly DecisionPro). Software we have created using Vanguard System allows calculations of the cost of a design to be made, and provides a colour-coded representation of the product tree. It is then possible to output this tree in the form of web pages, interactive diagrams and code in programming languages such as the Java based costing tool Cost Estimator. This enables people who are computer literate but are not software developers to produce decision support and cost models. It is possible to search the information both in Protege and on the Web as it is represented using searchable semantic web languages.

UWE leads the way in Research Council success - 23 August 2007

Research Funding - UWE News 2007 The University of the West of England won more Research Council grants last year than any other modern university and more than many of the traditional universities.
